CHIEF DIRECTORATE: STATE LAW ADVISORY SERVICES

A. Labour Law Training: General

The CD: SLAS facilitates a postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law offered by the University of Johannesburg in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

The course presenter is Prof Marius Olivier.

The training is interesting and stimulating and the assignments challenging – in all a most worthwhile exercise which is expected to result in improved skill and proficiency in labour law in the Office of the Premier and the other Provincial Departments in KwaZulu-Natal.

Costs of the Course: R8 400-00 per person plus R400-00 registration fee and an application fee of R145-00. The application fee only applies to persons who do not have a University of Johannesburg (previously, Rand Afrikaans University) student number (ie. those who have never been registered for any course with the University of Johannesburg or previously with RAU).

It is important to note that should we fail to reach the intended target of getting at least 30 students, the University of Johannesburg will not offer the Labour Law Course in KZN .

All prospective candidates must, as soon as possible, contact Mrs Corrie Hasse (Manager: Extracurricular Courses, UJ) at cjha@regte.rau.ac.za; (011) 489-2037 (tel); (011) 489-2399 (fax) to register and pay the required fees.

Dates for the first Workshop/ Block lecture

The first Workshop/ Block lecture took place successfully from  8 – 10 March 2007 in Pietermaritzburg, at Ascot Inn.

Assignments are due on 4 May 2007.

Note that on the 1st day, the Programme starts at 12h00 midday.  Please also ensure payment of your tuition fee before or on 2 March 2007.

It is deliberate that the course runs until the 10th (Saturday), and the reason is that the Lecturer who will be lecturing on this date is a Labour Law Specialist who is in private practice, and securing him during the week would otherwise have serious financial implications.

Dates for the second Workshop/ Block lecture

The second Workshop (second round of lectures) is scheduled for 17 – 19 July 2007 also at Ascot Inn.

Assignments were due on 3 August 2007.

The Examination took place from 08h00 on 23 October 2007 at the Embury Institute for Teacher Education, Lecture Room 3, 119 Windermere Road, Morningside, Durban

Of the 38 students registered for the course, 32 sat for the examination on 23 October 2007. Four of the six students that did not write, have made arrangements to write in January 2008. The cases/ circumstances of the other two students who did not write are unknown.

The Directorate: Legislation and Labour Law Advice  is currently investigating the feasibility of co-ordinating the facilitation of the course again in 2008.
